Margaret Elizabeth Thompson, age 78, passed away peacefully on March 15, 2024, at her home in Springfield, surrounded by her loving family after a life devoted to education and family.
Born on June 12, 1945, in Boston, Massachusetts, Margaret was the daughter of the late Robert and Helen Williams. She graduated from Boston University in 1967 with a degree in Education, beginning a remarkable 40-year career teaching elementary school children. Her classroom was known for its warmth, creativity, and the genuine care she showed each student.
Margaret married her beloved husband, James Thompson, on August 20, 1968. Together, they built a life filled with love, laughter, and countless cherished memories. She was a devoted mother who balanced her teaching career with creating a warm, nurturing home for her three children.
Known for her infectious laugh and generous spirit, Margaret loved gardening, reading historical fiction, and hosting Sunday dinners where family and friends gathered around her table. She was an active member of St. Mary's Church and volunteered with the literacy program at the local library.
She is survived by her husband of 55 years, James; her children, Robert (Susan) Thompson of New York, Jennifer (Michael) Anderson of Chicago, and David (Lisa) Thompson of Boston; eight adoring grandchildren who knew her as "Nana"; and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her brother, William Williams, and her parents.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM on March 20, 2024, at St. Mary's Church in Springfield. Burial will follow at Oakwood Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00 PM on March 19 at Johnson Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Springfield Education Foundation, continuing Margaret's legacy of fostering a love of learning in children.
